A logical explanation of what prompted Arjuna even to ask Bhagavan Krishna to take the Chariot and place it in the center of both Armies. 

King Dhritarashtra was a great strategist!!  The King also knew that  Pandavas were following Dharma and have support of Bhagavan Krishna.  And he knew that his own son Duryodhana was beyond  repair.

Therefore, a day before the war, he sent Sanjay with a message to Pandavas that: 
You all are followers of Dharma and War is not the answer to Dharma.  The War will come with it's co-lateral damage!!  

This seed was planted in Arjuna's conscious that prompted him to do one last check before the war.  Otherwise, Arjuna being the greatest warrior of the time knew who was on which side.  He knew what he needed to do.
