This verse was very confusing to me when I started studying the Gita.  Are women being accused of Adultery?  There is also lot of misinterpretation of the Caste and Caste system.  I have tried to explain this to the best of my ability after reading lot of commentaries and research.

Bhagavad Gita Part 1 and Part 2 - The teachings of the Gita was applicable at the
time it was spoken and applicable today and will be applicable for time to come.
In as much of the written modern history, there is clear evidence of post war atrocities.  The winning side have done many heinous crime against the losing side.  Unfortunately, women are the victim of abuse and sexual assault.  Men and children are not spared either.

Arjuna's argument is that since the men will die in the war, there will be atrocity on women.  The family foundation will be broken.  Another comment by Sri Madhusudana is that women may adapt immoral path since men would be doing it also.  End result of all that is - children born who would not have proper guidance and education.  Hence, leading to the destruction of the entire civilization.

At the lowest family unit, it is obvious that the practices and daily activities will be different for the 4 sections above.  This does not in any way advocating that Brahmins are superior to the other 3 varnas.  It only means that each varna had a specific function in the society.

An example may clarify.  Lets consider a Brahmin woman marries a Kshatriya man.  They have a child.  The child is introvert but has the great potential and passion to be an intellectual.  The father however is a CEO at a big company and persuading the child to become just like him when the child grows up.  The child when grown can never be content if he/she followed the father footsteps.  if the child followed his/her passion, will have the guilt that the father is disappointed.  That's what is meant by intermingling of caste.

Question to my readers:  Can intermingling also bring best of both?  Why was it prohibited then?
