I AM THAT - Obsession with the Body - 2

Obsession with the Body - 2

This is a brief review and summary of my understanding of I Am That – Talks with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj - Sense of "I Am"

Disclaimer: I am only a novice student of Vedanta and still an infant on the spiritual path, so I ask forgiveness for any misinterpretation of Maharaj’s teachings.

Life unfolds as a continuous stream of events. How I respond to these events is entirely up to me. So what is my task?

  • Remain poised.
  • Stay centered within myself even as I live among others.
  • Begin by being aware of my own presence.
    • I feel angry and defeated because my husband yelled at me, and I chose not to yell back.
    • I feel stressed after an argument with my teenage child.
    • I feel proud because I received a promotion and a generous compensation package.
    • I feel discomfort because I have a headache.
    • I feel encouraged because my part-time business is beginning to grow.

By observing both pleasure and pain—and continuously returning to poise—I move closer to the natural state.

  • Take time to gently heal from the hurt caused by the yelling. Reflect on how to avoid similar situations without continuing the cycle. Yelling back is never the answer if the goal is to end the pattern.
  • Approach conversations with your child with poise and attentiveness.
  • Receive the promotion with humility. Use the money in ways that bring peace:
    • Save a portion
    • Donate a portion
    • Allow yourself something meaningful
  • Care for the body when it signals distress. A headache may require medicine; the body is a finely tuned instrument, and maintenance is part of honoring it.
  • Continue nurturing your business so you can serve more people.
Practice cultivating poise in every situation. Recognize that all feelings and experiences arise from our attachment to the physical body. And then ask yourself: What lies beyond that?
